My
Philosophy
Within the field of psychology and mental health there are many theoretical perspectives that attempt to explain the causes of mental health concerns and how best to treat them. Unfortunately, mental health treatment tends to rely more heavily on some theoretical perspectives in the absence of others. As such, treatment plans can be unbalanced or insufficient. Sadly, clients can give up on treatment or express dissatisfaction at having only learned to cope with their symptoms.
In my practice I use an integrative approach that draws on multiple theoretical perspectives. I believe the various theoretical perspectives compliment each other and can be used in concert for a more holistic approach. Some of these theoretical perspectives include cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, and humanistic theoretical perspectives.
Perhaps one of the most surprising lessons I have learned over the years is how rapidly change can happen. It is commonly believed that longstanding issues require a lot of time and hard work to change. While this may be true in some instances, I have also observed that change can happen quite rapidly. This idea may seem surprising at first, however many of us already know this intuitively to be true. In a single moment, we can suddenly believe we are no longer safe. When this happens anxiety symptoms begin. Conversely, the reverse is also true. Once our mind recognizes we are safe then the anxiety symptoms are alleviated.
